Communicating Effectively Through Speech is an individualized approach to building skills in oral presentation--individualized because each participant is assigned his or her own consultant for four months! Together, they work to develop the specific skills the participant's job demands.

How does it work?

LR's program is based on the proven training model of learning, practice, feedback, and reinforcement.

For each of the six lessons, scheduled three weeks apart, the participant

• Reads a unit of text
• Records a presentation on audio or videotape
• Sends the presentation to his or her consultant--one of our "evaluators"

The evaluator analyzes the assignment and returns audiotaped feedback that details the presenter's strengths and weaknesses and then prescribes solutions.

Participants have the option of sending us a recording of an actual presentation or a practice recording of an upcoming communication--whether it's a large group presentation, a phone call, or a one-on-one conversation.

To ensure that learning is permanent, the participant also completes objective analysis and reinforcement exercises. The objective analysis exercises are unique and valuable learning tools that ask participants to analyze recordings of other's presentations.

These analyses help participants develop an objective "ear" and improve their own communications. The reinforcement exercises strengthen and maintain the skills acquired throughout our program.

In the sixth lesson, the evaluator comments on overall improvement and suggests a plan for continued development.

Objectives

Participants will learn how to:

• Think, plan, and speak in a variety of job-related situations
• Analyze their own performance
• Use language, voice, appearance, facial expression, and body movement for effective communication
• Control both content and audience
• Speak with confidence and composure
• Use the six building blocks of effective communication as a guide for constructing speech that is objective-oriented, organized, and based on listeners' needs and interests

• Unfolding
  Presenting information that is complete, clear and pertinent
• Opening
  Capturing the audience's attention and providing direction
• Envelopment
  Appealing to the audience's interest and personal characteristics
• Tone
  Creating the right mood through words and manner
• Release
  Providing a change of pace to prepare for a strong close
• Thrust
  Using closing words to refocus on the objective and encourage the audience to think, feel or act a certain way

1. An introductory welcome letter with course procedures
2. A data sheet for listing his or her particular needs
3. A 120-page text divided into six units
4. A course schedule
5. A Communication Flow Chart
6. Speaking exercises for each of the six units

Administering this program is easy

Continuing education credits

Communicating Effectively Through Speech conforms to the guidelines established by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training and qualifies for 15 contact hours (1.5 CEUs). Credit for this course may be granted by many professional organizations or by national, state, or local licensing boards when you submit this course description and your certificate of completion. We recommend that you contact your own board or organization to verify its requirements.
